This week, Alpha Tunes is focusing on songs from Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All-Time.” Check out these takes on classic songs, the listen on Spotify.

“Big Pimpin’” by Jay-Z
The song I found was “Big Pimpin” by Jay-Z. I liked the song mainly because of its beat. It has a very smooth beat where it would be easy to dance to and the lyrics are not repetitive but easy to sing and get caught in your head. The song was also the most successful single from his album Vol .3 of Life and Times of S. Carter that reached #18 on Billboard Top 100. If you’re looking for a song to party with this is your song.

There was a huge scandal for copyright on this song. The tune originated in an Egyptian movie back in 1960 but was used in 2007 by Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi whose song “Khosara Khosara” was used in this song that was later stolen by Jay-Z when he violated the copyright rules.

“Get Ur Freak On” by Missy Elliot
“Get Ur Freak On” by Missy Elliot is definitely a party hit, but frankly that and that only. This song is unique, with the Indian origin back melody along with the more contemporary pop/rock feel. The music is definitely one to dance to. I understand that the repetitive “get your freak on, get your freak on” is catchy and overtime has grown to a certain level of iconicness, but besides that loop, it feels rather bland, much like other pop jazz songs. But, that’s simply my view. As far as the general public, this song won dozens of awards, including “Best Single” in 2001, the year it was released. But, one of the other many reasons for its success was its remixable state and use in multiple well-known movies. As I mentioned, in the many reviews I read over, this song is famous for it’s dance-beat. At the time of release, this song and many other of Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot’s songs were known funnily enough for being futuristic, and genre-bending. The song is catchy yet forgettable in my taste. Although I’m sure this song hit the clubs with a bang 20 years ago, everything must come to an end. I understand why this made the top 500; it didn’t even make the top 400. Give it a listen. It might be your type of hit.

“Imagine” by John Lennon
I really love this song because I think it brings a powerful message to the listener. Also, I love how the song is slow at first and the voice get louder as the song goes on. The last thing I love is that this a slower song which i really love.

“The Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles
“The Tracks of My Tears” is a song that I would recommend to people who like slow songs. I like how the song is like an emotional song because when you listen to it you get kind of sad and that’s why it is considered an amazing song. The song has 81 thousand likes and 2.5 thousand dislikes and 12,487,401 million views. This song is not really my type of song but you may enjoy it.
